Acid/Alkaline (pH) Levels Determine Your Health

Last week, we learned a little about pH, the acid/alkalinity of the body. Following are a few of last-weeks highlights:
The pH scale runs from “0” (extremely acid) to “14” (extremely alkaline). A pH of 0 to 6.9 is acid; 7 is neutral, 7.1 to 14 is alkaline. Each unit increases by a factor of 10. To neutralize 1 part of acid requires 10 parts of alkalinity. The blood must maintain a pH between 7.35 and 7.45 in order to properly support life.
If the pH of the blood drops below 7:0, and into the acid zone, cells stop functioning and we die! Likewise, if the blood becomes too alkaline (above 7.8) we die, thus the imperative of keeping the blood pH properly balanced and slightly alkaline.
Everything we place into our mouth in the form of food or drink or drug, has either an acidifying or alkalizing effect upon the body’s pH. Most plant foods are alkaline and all animal source foods are acid, as is sugar, most processed foods, and most grains.
Since all substances placed into the mouth have a pH value, it is easy to see how what we eat or drink affects the acidity or alkalinity of the body, and thus the health, and longevity of the individual.
Finally, in last week’s Health Tip, we took a long look at the diet God gave mankind in Genesis 1:29 and saw that it was predominantly an alkalizing diet, designed by God to keep most body fluids in the alkaline zone.
When Body pH Turns Acidic Symptoms Of Disease Manifest
The Standard American Diet (SAD) is predominantly acidic and thus not of proper pH for the human physical body, which was designed by God to maintain in most instances an alkaline environment, not only for survival, but also for health.
What Foods Are Acidic?
The list of acid foods is long and this list is far from complete: Coffee, most teas, sport drinks, all candy, white bread, donuts, cookies, cakes, crackers, most pastas, rolls and breakfast cereals (both hot and cold); all dairy products, including milk, ice cream, yogurt, and cheese (even cottage cheese); all animal flesh foods, including beef, chicken, pork, and lamb; chocolate is extremely acidic, with soft drinks being the most acidic substance we can place into our body.
Since all the substances we place into our mouth have a pH value, it is not difficult to see how greatly the acid/alkalinity of the body fluids, including the blood, is affected by what we eat and drink.
While most body fluids should maintain an alkaline pH, the colon is an exception, as it is designed by God to maintain an acid pH (5.5 to 6.9) and is host to the vast majority of our bacteria, both friendly and unfriendly. Friendly bacteria must predominate in the colon, but antibiotics and chlorinated water destroy friendly bacteria, causing damage to the colon wall, allowing bacteria and parasites to seep into the blood. An insufficient amount of friendly bacterium in the colon leads to yeast overgrowth (Candida).
Too Much Acid In the Diet Causes Physical Breakdown
An incredibly large number of physical problems and diseases can be initiated by consuming large amounts of acidifying substances. Sadly, as we have already learned, most of the foods being consumed today, especially those found in the Standard American Diet (SAD) are acidic.
The SAD is composed primarily of acid-forming foods – animal proteins, sugars, grains, and processed foods, while greatly lacking in alkalizing vegetable foods, which are high in alkalizing minerals. In addition to all the acid-forming food being consumed on the SAD, many people increase their acid intake by consuming such stimulants as tobacco, coffee, tea, and alcohol, which are all highly acidifying.
The body is comprised of approximately 70% water, containing a wide range of solutions, which are primarily alkaline. The potential of Hydrogen (pH) is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution – the ratio between positively charged ions (acid-forming) and negatively charged ions (alkaline forming). The pH of any solution is the measure of its Hydrogen-ion concentration.
A diet high in acidifying substances puts pressure on the body’s regulatory systems which were designed by God to maintain proper pH in all body fluids. When an excess of acid forming food and drink is taken into the body, it causes the body to begin stripping the body of its alkalizing minerals – calcium, potassium, magnesium, etc., in an effort to neutralize all of that acidity, leading to chronic and degenerative diseases.
As the body robs these alkalizing minerals from vital organs, especially from the bones, in an effort to neutralize the acidity, it causes osteoporosis, along with “acidosis”, which leads to a long list of physical problems and breakdowns.
Health Problems Caused By Acidosis
Following is a partial listing of problems caused by acidosis:

- Osteoporosis
- Low energy & chronic fatigue
- Slow digestion & elimination

- Excess stomach acid
- Gastritis
- Thin & splitting nails
- Dull hair, splitting ends, & falling out
- Dry skin
- Cramps and spasms
Alkaline pH Necessary for Healing
No matter what means a person chooses in an attempt to bring healing to their body, it will not be effective until the pH level of the body’s fluids are brought into proper pH range. When a person adopts the Hallelujah Diet, an alkalizing diet, they usually see rapid improvement in their health because they are creating an internal environment conducive to healing.
Acidosis makes it difficult for the body to effectively assimilate vitamins, minerals and food supplements, decreases the body’s ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients, decreases energy production in the cells, decreases the body’s ability to repair damaged cells, decreases its ability to detoxify heavy metals, makes tumors grow, and makes the body more susceptible to fatigue and illness.
In Review
The higher the pH of any solution, the more alkaline and oxygen rich the fluid, while the lower the pH reading, the more acid and oxygen deprived the fluid. In the understanding of pH, it is important that we remember the pH range is from 0 to 14, with 7.0 being neutral, and anything above 7.0 being alkaline and any reading below 7.0 being acid.
It is also important to remember that the pH of the blood must remain slightly alkaline (7.35 – 7.45) in order to sustain life. A pH below 7.35 cause’s physical breakdown to begin to manifest though not causing death till it drops below 7.0. Physical breakdown can also begin to manifest if the pH becomes overly alkaline, above 7.45 pH. If the blood pH moves below 7.0 or above 7.8, cells cease functioning and the body dies.
Clearly, as the Psalmist proclaimed in Psalm 139:14, we are: “…Fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”
Most vegetables leave an alkaline ash after digestion, while most berries and grains leave an acid ash after digestion. The Genesis 1:29 diet, which was designed by God, automatically maintains proper pH within all body systems. When a person consumes the Hallelujah Acres Diet, which is patterned after God’s Genesis 1:29 diet, there is no need for concern regarding the body maintaining proper pH in all body systems.
Using pH strips to determine acidity or alkalinity of saliva and/or urine are a waste of time and often cause unnecessarily concern. These strips do not give an accurate evaluation of the true pH of these fluids as the readings are greatly skewed by what food or drink has been consumed prior to the reading.
We must remember that when a person consumes the Standard American Diet (SAD), a diet containing excessive amounts of acid substances, there is potential for great harm. And on the flip side, when a person puts excessively alkaline substances into the body, such as in antacids as well as water from those alkalizing machines recently on the market, they have the potential of creating problems by overly alkalizing body fluids.
The Dangers of Antacids
The stomach needs to maintain an acid pH (below 7.0) in order to properly digest food. When a person takes an antacid (i.e. Zantac, Nexium [the purple pill], Pepsid AC, Tums, etc.), it alkalizes stomach fluids, making it impossible for the stomach to properly digest foods, and this can lead to major physical problems.
Problems caused by insufficient acidity in the stomach include ulcers, colon problems including cancer, leaky gut syndrome, food allergies, autoimmune diseases, and a polluted colon and liver. The longer a person remains on an antacid, the greater the risk of physical breakdown.
We need to be very careful not to go overboard with alkalinity, especially when it pertains to the stomach, which must maintain an acid pH in order to properly digest foods.
I have become increasingly concerned about the popularity of the alkalizing machines recently being made available to the public (at great cost might I add), because of their potential for neutralizing stomach acid, making it difficult to impossible for the stomach to properly digest food.
Remember, proper pH balance in all organs is imperative for good health, digestion, and longevity.
Seminars in South Carolina and Tennessee Great Success

This past weekend held some great opportunities for sharing the Hallelujah Health Message. Friday evening Rhonda and this editor drove from our home in Shelby, North Carolina to Lexington, South Carolina for a 10:00 a.m. Saturday Morning seminar at the Life Springs Worship Center. We were thrilled when they had to keep adding extra chairs as people continued to arrive even after the seminar had begun.
Drove home Saturday evening and then early Sunday we left home again and drove to Kingsport, Tennessee for a 2:00 p.m. seminar in the Higher Ground Baptist Church. Nearly 200 were in attendance for this seminar and it was so good to have people in attendance who had gotten on the Hallelujah Diet way back when Hallelujah Acres had its beginning in Rogersville in the early 1990s. They were still on the Hallelujah Diet and still rejoicing in their good health.
In both seminars, the testimonies shared were outstanding. Testimonies of cancers gone, diabetic no longer, arthritis a thing of the past, reports of wonderful weight loss, and as always blood pressure and cholesterol readings now normal. Several in each seminar said they are coming for Health Minister training in March.
We arrived home late Sunday evening after two days on the road, driving over 300 miles, and delivering two seminars. Had no fatigue at any time over the weekend but was sure looking forward to a good night’s sleep when we arrived home.

The week of February 8th was a big week here at Hallelujah Acres as we celebrated Hallelujah Acres 18th anniversary and this editor’s 76th birthday. Also, on February 3rd we reached the halfway mark with our 60 Days to a Hallelujah Waistline challenge. Over 7,000 people from around the world have accepted the challenge, and the reports of weight loss are continuing to pour in. I’ll share a few of the letters received this past week below:

One of your Health Ministers sent me a flyer for your seminar in Hudson Falls, New York this past September. My wife dragged me to the seminar because I had been feeling so bad for so long. I attended your seminar out of curiosity, telling her that if going on the diet meant me becoming a vegan, there was no way I was going to quit my steak and pizza, bacon, eggs, etc. Well I did start the Hallelujah Diet shortly after attending your seminar at the end of September and five months later had lost 50 pounds and have never felt better in my life. I am now in the process of being weaned off a bunch of medications.
Because I was visibly in such poor health and failing fast, my success has made a great impression on many people, and especially those people in my congregation.
P.S. I have a pastor friend who is a severe diabetic who has had a number of hospitalizations due to being in such poor health, and each trip he makes to the hospital gets him that much closer to death. They serve a small struggling Bible church where income is limited. Have you ever considered those in need that can’t afford to pay for the products they so desperately need to help them restore wellness, especially those in full-time Christian ministry.

My wife Tresa has lost 16 pounds and three inches from her waist. We walk two miles briskly each day and have been doing the FIT10 daily for two weeks. On September 30, 2009, my husband who is 64 years old was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer, as well as rectal cancer, that had metastasized to his liver. Doctors told us he had less than six months to live if he refused chemotherapy. In addition to this cancer diagnosis, my husband had four by-passes in 2007 and was placed on medication for high blood pressure and diabetes.
My husband turned down the chemotherapy the doctors wanted to give him, stopped taking his medications, and started the Recovery Hallelujah Diet plan. He also began walking 30 minutes each day.
As of today, just four months since making the diet change, my husband’s blood pressure is now in normal range (115/77) without medication, and the red mole behind his ear has shrunk. The blood in his stools has stopped, though he still is experiencing some distress in his abdomen.

Hallelujah Acres Introduces a New Juicer – The “Hurom”

Ever since being told I had colon cancer in 1976, and was encouraged by Evangelist Lester Roloff to change what I ate, and to drink a lot of vegetable juice, I have been juicing daily. To this current day, Rhonda and I juice at least a 25-pound bag of organic California carrots plus other veggies weekly.
The reason I continue to juice vegetables daily is because less than a year after changing my diet and drinking one to two quarts of vegetable juice daily, my cancer was gone, and without any help from drugs. Because of what I have learned about the importance of drinking vegetable juices and not wanting my cancer to return, I have continued to drink vegetable juices daily for the past 34 years.
During these many years of juicing, I have had a fascination for juicers. Whenever a new juicer came on the market, I had to have one so that I could compare it with the other juicers I had tested. Some of those tested were immediately rejected as inferior. Others gained my interest, some my respect, but just a few get my recommendation.
I remember way back in 1978, while lecturing at the Shangri-La Health Resort in Bonita Springs, Florida, I was comparing the different juicers on the market and telling why I didn’t like a particular centrifugal juicer, not realizing the owner of the company that made that particular juicer was in the room. Obviously he didn’t appreciate what I had to say about his machine, but what I had shared was the truth.
Through the years I have had in my kitchen the following juicers: A manual Wheat Grass Juicer, Acme, Juiceman II, Jack LaLanne, Omega, Green Power, Green Star, Champion, and Norwalk Press, just to name a few. So when it comes to juicers you can see that I have had a little experience with juicers through the years.
But there has never been a juicer come into my kitchen, that the first time I used it, I was as excited as when I saw and tested the “Hurom” juicer. After giving away most of the juicers that have come my way through the years, we still have in our pantry or kitchen a Norwalk, a Green Star, a Champion, and now excitedly, a “Hurom”.
Let me take a few minutes to share a little about juicing and what I have learned about the various juicers and why I recommend only a few of the many dozens of juicers on the market today:
THE PURPOSE OF JUICING
According to Dr. Kirschner, M.D. in his book Raw Food Juices (out of print), we learn that when we eat a whole raw carrot and send it through the digestive system, we use a lot of energy separating out the pulp and fiber from the juice, while the digestive process itself causes the loss of over 65% of the nutrients. (Few people realize that the body cannot utilize the fiber part of food, but only the juice contained within those fibers.)
However, if we run a carrot through a juicing machine before placing it into our mouth, the machine does the work of the digestive system by separating out the pulp and fiber before the carrot enters the body. When we drink this juice, because it contains no fiber, it has no need to go through the digestive process, because now it can go directly to cellular level almost intravenously. And the percentage of nutrients that reach cellular level when we drink the juice without the fiber is approximately 92%, compared to less than 35% when we leave the fiber in the juice or eat the whole carrot.
THE PROBLEM WITH CENTRIFUGAL JUICERS
Raw vegetable juice is very susceptible to oxidation. If you were to place apple slices on a table you would see them quickly turn brown – that’s oxidation. That means the loss of nutrients. A centrifugal juicer spins a basket at thousands of RPM’s and flings the juice through the air, bombarding it with oxygen, thus causing oxidation. If a person is dealing with a serious physical problem, I discourage the use of a centrifugal juicer.
CHAMPION AND GREEN STAR JUICERS
For many years Hallelujah Acres has been promoting the Champion and Green Star Juicers. They are both superior machines. The Champion is a workhorse. Through the years, a number of people have shared with me that they have been using their Champion every day for over 20 years and it was still running.
The twin-gear Green Star has been a wonderful machine, because it doesn’t introduce any oxygen into the juice. Rather it presses the juice out of the veggies without ripping open the cells of the food with knife blades. It also does an excellent job juicing leafy greens which most other juicers have difficulty doing.
The Champion and Green Star are unique in that they not only do an excellent job at juicing, but can also make nut butters and soft frozen fruit desserts. So we are still going to recommend the Champion and Green Star, but we are also going to add, because of my personal use and evaluation, a new juicer to our line of juicers recommended here at Hallelujah Acres – the “Hurom”.
HERE ARE JUST A FEW REASON WHY I RECOMMEND THE “HUROM” JUICER:
- It has the tiniest footprint on the kitchen counter of all the non-centrifugal juicers.
- It has a carrying handle and is lighter in weight than many.
- It does not spin a basket nor does it shred the vegetable with knife blades.
- It juices leafy greens and even grasses without foam.
- It extracts more juice than most juicers, leaving a very dry pulp
- It does not introduce oxygen into the juice, thus practically no oxidation.
- The juice has a superior taste.
- It’s so easy to use it makes juicing easy and, believe it or not, FUN!
- It has fewer parts and is easier to clean than most juicers.
- It is the quietist juicer I have ever used.
- It is built to last and carries a 10-year warranty
But the feature I like the best and the one I believe will be appreciated especially by those who do not have a lot of strength, is that you do not have to physically push the food into the machine. Rather, you simply drop the food into a giant auger that pulls the food into the machine and then presses the juice out of the fruit or vegetable.
I must say it is the easiest juicer I have ever had the privilege of using, and the first juicer I have ever used that I actually look forward to my next juicing session.
