How Prayer Can Hinder The Healing of God’s People
Sep 27th
The response to last week’s Health Tip story “How Churches Promote Ill Health” was incredible!
In fact it generated more response than any Health Tip I had previously written (and I have written some 700 of them).
Here is a sampling of those responses:
“Rev. Malkmus: I wholeheartedly agree with you. But, I think you left out one thing in your comments. Food IS a GOD. Sometimes it’s the MOST WORSHIPPED GOD in our churches.”
“Praise God for this awesome message, Dr Malkmus! I often preach the same thing as I educate others about honoring God with their temples.”
“Thank you, Bro. Malkmus! I just read your sermon on the foods that church people eat and I totally agree with you! In fact, I would like to send this to my pastor, but first I need to pray for the courage to forward it.”
“AMEN! Thank you for posting this! It’s about time someone said it. You have just expressed my thoughts completely!!”
“Hallelujah once again for a great message. Since 2002, when I first learned the truth about nutrition, I have been hearing those “90% of the prayers” in churches everywhere — prayers for divine healing of diseases that we have unknowingly brought upon ourselves.”
“Praise the Lord I feel like shouting right now, I’ve been saying this and saying this. We go to the alter for prayer, have hands laid on us, and that’s all good, but we go right back to our seats and to our house and eat the same as before and never change or do our part. Because God requires we have a part to play in our healing, we never receive our healing. In fact I was that person, but when I got tired of being sick and tired, I got on my face and cried out to God to help me. And ever since that day I’m not the same person. What a wonderful change has come over me. Before I changed my diet I weighed 198 pounds. Today I weigh 134 pounds. That’s a 64 pound weight loss. Before the diet change I was on 12 medications and today I’m only on one and on my way to none. Glory to God for the things He has done.”
This week I want to deal with a similar subject; but first let’s take a brief look at how most churches deal with sickness.
How Churches Deal With Sickness
I personally pastored various churches for nearly 20 years up until I was told I had colon cancer at age 42 (36 years-ago). I know how I personally dealt with sickness in the various churches I pastored back then. Guess what? It’s still the way most pastors and churches deal with sickness today.
In my churches, especially on prayer meeting night, after the people had opportunity to share their prayer requests, we would have prayer for those sick individuals. Also, when people would come up to me individually and share that they or a loved one was seriously ill, I would immediately stop and have prayer for that sick one.
However, by asking God to heal that person of their infirmities, in reality, we are turning over to God any responsibility the person has for dealing with the physical problem themselves.
What kind of results are we getting in response to these prayers for healing in our churches?
Be honest, now…
Why Are So Many Not Receiving Healing In Answer To Prayer?
In most churches, requests for healing of physical problems are the dominant prayer request – usually over 90%.
Does everyone for whom we pray get well in response to these prayers?
Don’t get me wrong. I believe that the Bible is the very word of God (see II Timothy 3:16-17). I also believe that the God of the Bible is also a prayer hearing and answering God. “Call unto me and I will answer thee . . .” (Jeremiah 33:3).
During my pastoring years in both large and small congregations, numerous people asked for prayer for the physical needs of themselves, a friend or loved one. Not only would I earnestly beseech God for healing in prayer on their behalf, but I would also share these prayer requests with the congregation for additional prayer.
Sadly, there were numerous times when the congregation and I would pray earnestly for someone’s healing, especially for a seriously ill child or someone with cancer, and yet I ended up conducting that person’s funeral.
How can we explain this?
Is it God’s fault healing did not take place or ……
Could Prayer Sometimes Hinder The Healing Of God’s People?
There is a song we used to sing in our church, and one of the verses goes like this:
If your body suffers pain and your health you can’t regain,
And your soul is almost sinking in despair,
Jesus knows the pain you feel, He can save and He can heal;
Take your burden to the Lord and LEAVE IT THERE.
I believe one of the primary reasons prayers for healing so often do not result in healing is because that is exactly what we do, we “Take our burden to the Lord and LEAVE IT THERE.”
Could our leaving our burden with the Lord present a problem?
Could this hinder healing?
If we want to obtain healing from our numerous infirmities, we need to do more than just ask God to heal us – we must also seek His guidance as to what part He would have us play in that healing.
We have already learned that prayers and faith in so many instances are not sufficient to bring about healing and here’s why…
“Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works” shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead.” (James 2:17-20)
Now I believe God is capable of healing our physical problems in answer to a prayer without any help from us.
But obviously, when we see so many of those for whom we prayed not receiving healing (and dying), we need to seek the reason “WHY”.
And that reason my friend, I believe, is that God usually wants us to participate and become active in the bringing about of that healing.
Sadly, our churches do not teach us to go beyond “taking our burdens to the Lord and leaving them there”.
When we desire healing for ourselves or another, our prayer should not just be, “Lord heal me” or “them”, but rather: “Lord, please reveal to me the knowledge I need, that will put me on the path to bring about the healing I am praying for.”
The Bible even tells us how to obtain that knowledge:
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8)
My Personal Experience
Way back in 1976 I was told I had colon cancer. But I had lost all faith in the medical community to heal my cancer because of my mother’s horrible experience going the medical route.
Not to mention, God had not answered my prayers for her healing.
So, I changed my approach.
I asked the Lord to show me where to turn for help in my healing.
In answer to that prayer, the Lord led me to Evangelist Lester Roloff who encouraged me to change my diet to what we call today “The Hallelujah Diet.”
The knowledge Brother Roloff imparted to me not only led to the healing of my cancer, but also led to the founding of Hallelujah Acres. So, essentially, that prayer for direction has resulted in health restoration for millions of Christians around the world, removing all manner of both physical and psychological problems for the past 20 years.
If we desire to stop seeing all those prayer request sheets in our churches loaded with people dealing with cancer and numerous other physical problems…
If we desire to stop seeing them die and attending their funerals…
Then we the church must do more than just pray for a person’s healing.
The church must also inform people that the sick person needs to become an active participant in their own healing by asking: “Lord what must I do to help bring about this healing I am seeking?”
It is so thrilling to receive letters from people who approached their healing this way. These letters testify that, after being prayed for in the church and not receiving healing, the pastor or another member of the church encouraged that person to investigate The Hallelujah Diet.
And when they did, it put them on the path that led them to the healing they were seeking!
How Faith In Modern Medicine Can Hinder The Healing Of God’s People
In our churches, after prayer, what is the very next thing a person is advised to do by the pastor and most everyone else in the church?
Is it not, “you need to get to a doctor”?
By going to a doctor, we are actually saying, “I do not believe God is capable of bringing about the healing and God needs help.”
This act indicates that we do not have faith in God’s ability to heal us, and that we believe the modern medicine is God’s source of help.
But how is modern medicine doing?
Is it bringing about the healing we so desire? Or are we still, in spite of it all, watching people continue to get sicker and eventually dying?
NEXT WEEK I will, Lord willing, and if the creeks don’t rise too high, deal with the subject: “IS THERE A BETTER WAY?” We will take a close look at the results we are obtaining when seek help from modern medicine. Don’t miss this eye-opening message! In fact, you may want to share it (and today’s message) with your pastor, Sunday School teacher, and fellow Christians.
How Churches Promote Ill Health
Sep 20th
This may sound like a crazy title for a message, but I trust you will seriously consider its content and take action on what you are about to read.
During almost 20 years in the pastoral ministry, I founded two and pastored several other Baptist churches. In addition to the churches I pastored, I have been a member of and faithfully attended several other churches. When added up, I have pastored or attended churches for over 54 years since becoming a Christian in 1957.
In addition, I have also had opportunity during the past 20 years to share God’s health message in hundreds of churches across America and in a number of foreign lands. These churches were of more than a dozen different denominations.
As a result of being in so many different churches over such a long period of time, I have a pretty good handle on what is and what is not being taught concerning the physical body, and what is offered to the children and adults in those churches to eat and drink.
In short, when I say that “Churches Promote Ill Health” I know what I am talking about.
In fact, for most of the years that I pastored, I must confess, I personally participated in, encouraged, and was responsible for “promoting ill health” in the various churches I pastored.
I did it in ignorance, but that doesn’t alter the fact that I was responsible.
You likely attend a church that “promotes ill health” as well.
“How can this be?”you may ask.
I’ll explain, but first here’s a little biblical foundation:
We Are Triune Beings
Just as the God Head is comprised of three persons (the Trinity), “God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit” (See I John 5:1-20), we humans are triune beings as well, comprised of: “spirit, soul, and body”:
“I pray God your whole spirit and soul and BODY, be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Thessalonians 5:23) Notice this scripture says that we should pray that all three parts, “spirit, soul, and BODY, be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Now stick with me! Does not the Bible also admonish preachers that they preach the whole counsel of God?
Here is what the apostle Paul had to say about the whole counsel of God in Acts 20:27-28:
“For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”
When Was The Last Time…
Now, in most churches the messages coming from the pulpit center on the “soul and spirit” of man and how to protect the soul and spirit from the world’s influence! This type of preaching is right and proper.
But when was the last time you heard a preacher preach on the “BODY,” the physical BODY that houses the “soul and spirit?”
When was the last time you heard a preacher share how to maintain it in wellness and protect it from the influences of the world?
Or rather did the preacher make a big joke about that double dip chocolate concoction they ate last week?
I remember a very obese evangelist whom I asked to hold a series of meetings in a church I pastored a number of years ago. During his message said that he wanted to die drowning in a great big bowl of chicken gravy.
He said it in jest, but how many times do we hear preachers make jest of some unhealthy food they ate the past week?
And when was the last time you heard in a Sunday school class how to maintain that physical body so that it would be a fit vessel to house the “soul and spirit?”
Is not a fit and healthy physical body a necessity for the body to be a fit vessel for the Master’s use?
If this earthly house (our body) is not kept healthy and strong, how can we ever fulfill the earthly ministry God has called each of us to?
And yet from the pulpit and the Sunday School classroom we hear nary a word about this. There is absolute silence on the subject of how to maintain a physical body that is fit for the Master’s use in our churches.
Why Is There No Teaching or Preaching About This?
Why is there no teaching or preaching in the church on how to maintain our physical bodies in a state of wellness so that we can have a healthy body with which to serve the Lord?
Why are some 90% of the prayer requests in our churches for the healing of those in our churches who are sick?
Do you not see a relationship between how we nourish these physical bodies and the physical problems the people in our churches experience and pray to be healed from?
Has Satan blinded our eyes to this glaring and obvious relationship? Should not wellness be of the highest priority in our church and should not wellness be the testimony of our church people?
Does not the Bible admonish us in Romans 12:1 to take proper care of these physical bodies? It says that we should “present [our] BODIES a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is [our] reasonable service.”
And with regard to these physical bodies, does not the Bible tell us in Romans 12:2 how “not” to take care of these physical BODIES: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
There are further teachings on how to take care of our bodies in I Corinthians 6:19-20: “What? Know ye not that YOUR BODY is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own. For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in YOUR BODY, and in your spirit, which are Gods.”
Yet In The Church…
Sadly, in the church, in spite of all the biblical warnings we have just read, we have done just the opposite of what God admonishes us to do in Romans 12:1-2.
We eat the world’s diet, we go to the world’s doctors, we take the world’s drugs, and we suffer the same consequences of ill health as the world’s people who go this same worldly route.
The world’s people are sick, tired, and dying prematurely and needlessly — and so are God’s people.
What should we do about it? Here is what God says: “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing and I will receive you.”
We in the church have bought into the world’s system. Indeed, we have brought the world’s system into our churches and homes, and we are paying a horrible price.
It is high time that we begin preaching from our pulpits and teaching in our Sunday schools, how to properly nourish and maintain these physical bodies we have on loan from God.
How Churches Promote Ill Health
While a pastor in one of my churches, we had a bus ministry comprised of five large school buses plus a van.
What was constantly being given these bus kids to encourage them to get on and ride to church? CANDY!
And in junior church we gave them cupcakes and soda pop, all loaded with sugar.
In our church socials, the tables were heaped with sugar desserts, and animal flesh was the predominate offering – barbecued pork, southern fried chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, and you name it.
And for dessert there were the high sugar content donuts, cakes, cookies, pies, etc.
And for a beverage is it not sugar-laden sodas and coffee and tea?
Are you aware that these items — that are being offered and served in our churches to this very day — contribute to ill health?
Sugar destroys the immune system and makes us susceptible to colds, viruses, and bacteria and yes… cancer! Sugar also causes our children to misbehave and contributes to depression.
The fat in the animal products clog up the arteries and cause high blood pressure, need for stents and bypasses along with heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes. These animal products also cause cancer, arthritis, asthma, acid stomach, heartburn, gout, liver problems and more.
What Should Churches Do?
Rather than promoting ill health by giving the children unhealthy items to eat and drink, we should provide the children in our churches with health promoting foods like apples, oranges, date-nut balls, and other healthy snacks.
For beverages let’s give them ice water, rather than sugar-laden soda pop and Kool-Aid.
And for our socials, let’s provide our church people with such items as salads of all kinds – vegetable salads, bean salads, corn salads, whole grain pasta salads, etc., along with baked white and sweet potatoes, and a variety of cooked and raw vegetables and fresh fruits.
There are so many delicious dishes that tantalize the taste buds and fill the stomach that are healthy and health promoting. Why do we have to serve our church people at the various church functions unhealthy fare that promotes ill health?
Does this make any sense?
And what is the result of providing all this sickness-promoting food and drink? On prayer meeting night, 90% of the prayer requests are for physical problems caused by placing these unhealthy sugar and animal flesh items into our body.
It’s shocking to realize that the church is contributing to the sickness that necessitates these prayer requests.
Let’s Stop Promoting Sickness In Our Churches
In the church where Rhonda and I currently attend, at our church socials, we have a special table designated “Hallelujah Acres Food”, where healthy foods are available. And it is exciting to see that people whose diet has always consisted of the unhealthy foods come and try our healthy foods, and find out how tasty these healthy foods can be.
Since we started attending our current church, dozens of the people have adopted The Hallelujah Diet and reporting all kinds of improvements in their health – weight losses of over 50 pounds, diabetes gone, high blood pressure now normal, energy increased, and the list goes on.
May every pastor set the example by adopting a health promoting diet and then start promoting health in their churches.
May every Sunday school teacher adopt this 100% plant-based diet and start promoting health in their individual classes.
My dear friends, let’s each of us be challenged to STOP promoting sickness in our own body and the churches we pastor, teach in, or attend, so that we can have a church full of healthy people, people who have bodies fit for the Master’s use!
EDITORS NOTE: If you are concerned about the promotion of ill health in your church, may I encourage you to forward this article to all the pastors, Sunday School teachers and others in your church who need to hear this message. Also, send it to friends and loved ones who attend other churches as well. Let’s each do our part to STOP promoting ill health in the church of Jesus Christ.
2011 Hallelujah Acres Picnic
Sep 12th
If there was any doubt that Hallelujah Acres is in NASCAR country, this weekend’s staff picnic settled it!
Over 150 staff and family members came out to the local go-cart track to claim a checkered flag or two at the annual Hallelujah Acres Staff Picnic.
It was a blast!
It seemed to us that our shipping department was the fastest — no doubt, since they’re used to getting your orders to you at lightning speed!
One has to wonder if BarleyMax heightens racing skills? Hmm…
It’s not the first time Hallelujah Acres has been associated with racing.
Race car driver Jarrod Sessler adopted The Hallelujah Diet after he was given a 5% chance of surviving a diagnosis of advanced, metastasized skin cancer.
Help Stop the FDA’s Proposal: Sept. 8
Sep 3rd
The Alliance for Natural Health has designated September 8 as “Call In Lobbying Day” to help stop a new FDA proposal that has the potential to stifle or even ban your access to popular dietary supplements!
Under the proposal, some of the most well known and trusted dietary supplements on the market will be force fed to lab animals (in unrealistic, extreme doses) in attempt to argue that these nutrients are “unsafe.”
If deemed as such, now-widely available nutrients like fish oil and curcumin could be reclassified as food additives, which will put them under the control of pharmaceutical companies. This has the very real potential to cause prices to skyrocket and to limit your access to them.
What Can You Do?
Click this link to notify the FDA to let them know that you object! If you wish, you may copy and paste the following sample letter:
Dear Sir/Madam,
The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 states that “the Federal Government should not take any actions to impose unreasonable regulatory barriers limiting or slowing the flow of safe products and accurate information to consumers.”
I find the FDA’s new draft guidance (Draft Guidance for Industry: Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) Notifications and Related Issues) to be a direct violation of the Act.
This draft guidance attempts to treat beneficial dietary supplements as drugs, which indeed creates an “unreasonable regulatory barrier.” In effect, it will unnecessarily drive up prices for said supplements and create an arbitrary approval system which threatens to ban public access to new supplements.
Moreover, because of ill-founded new guidelines as to what is a “safe” dose of certain nutrients, therapeutic amounts could be made unavailable, thus seriously impacting public health.
I vehemently oppose this bill and urge the FDA to withdraw this draft guidance immediately.
The Villages of Hallelujah Acres Adds Two New Homes
Jul 18th
Activity in The Villages of Hallelujah Acres has really increased this summer, and we are excitedly watching it develop!
The Villages is America’s first healthy living community based on the principles of The Hallelujah Diet. Ultimately, the Villages will have 600 residences, including 190 condominiums (1, 2, & 3 bedroom) each with a private balcony overlooking King’s Mountain. Then there are the garden homes on quarter-acre lots and estate homes on half-acre lots. The estate homes will be in a gated community.
All utilities are already installed underground. The roads, sidewalks, and street lights are in and designated bicycle paths are already marked along the edges of the paved roads.
Our organic orchard was planted this spring including apple, peach, pear, cherry, fig, and pomegranate trees. And we’ll be planting some blueberry bushes very soon!
Recently, the lakes at The Villages were stocked with bass, brim, and catfish and we are looking forward to some good fishing opportunities in the future. (Of course, this is for catch-and-release sport fishing only!)
Irrigation to the orchard and vegetable gardens has been installed, walking trails around the lakes marked, and construction of the walking trails will soon begin.
A brand new home is nearing completion while construction of another is just getting started! These homes are in addition to some already established homes, including the one belonging to Rev. George and Rhonda Malkmus. As more homes go up in this steadily growing neighborhood, interest among passers-by is definitely heating up!

115 New Health Ministers Graduate
Jul 11th
This past week we held our 76th Health Minister Training here at Hallelujah Acres International Headquarters in Shelby, NC.
On Friday afternoon 115 new Health Ministers received their diplomas and joined more than 10,000 previously trained Health Ministers. Seven pastors were among the graduates, who add to more than 900 who have previously graduated from the program.
These new Health Ministers were here from around the world: Russia, Japan, Australia, South Africa, Nigeria, Madagascar, Costa Rica, Canada, and from most states in the United States.
Those from Russia, Japan, Madagascar, and Costa Rica are the first Health Ministers in their respective countries, and all are excited about taking God’s health message back to their fellow countrymen! Prior to this Health Minister training we had trained Health Ministers from not only every state in the U.S., but 50 foreign lands.
Our first Health Minister Training was held in August 1994. Since then, we have held trainings at least three times each year ever since.
Our next Health Minister Training here at Hallelujah Acres will be on Wednesday through Friday, November 9 through 11, 2011. Sign up here!
Rev. Malkmus’ 2-Day Workshop
This past Monday and Tuesday, Rev. Malkmus held his popular 2-Day Workshop, attended by a record 76 participants!
Those attending this 2-Day Workshop spend two days with Rev. Malkmus to learn the finer points of The Hallelujah Diet.
This program is one of three possible prerequisites for Health Minister Training. The other two options are to attend a Hallelujah Acres Lifestyle Center or complete Hallelujah Acres’ “Get Healthy Stay Balanced” course.
Our next 2-Day Workshop with Rev. Malkmus is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, November 7-8, 2011. Sign up here!
Rev. Malkmus Meets With Polish Book Distributor
This past Thursday afternoon, Rev. Malkmus met with a Polish businessman and his wife. This gentleman shared that he had been scheduled for bariatric surgery for his obese condition. The doctors had given him glowing testimonies of others who had successfully lost considerable weight following this surgery.
However, as he searched the Internet for more information, he discovered that many people who underwent this surgery had developed some pretty nasty long-term side effects.
So, he cancelled his surgery and he and his wife adopted The Hallelujah Diet. Thus far, he has lost more than 75 pounds and his wife is recovering from breast cancer.
This personal experience has inspired this man to bring The Hallelujah Diet to his countrymen whom he said are just as sick as the people in America.
His desire led him to obtain permission to publish Rev. Malkmus’ latest book “The Hallelujah Diet” in Polish — and it is already selling well in Poland! This book is also being translated into Spanish and French.
He is now in the midst of publishing Rev. Malkmus’ original book “Why Christians Get Sick” into Polish as well! There are more than one million copies of this book in print in the English language.
Rev. Malkmus says, “I can’t begin to tell you how exciting it is to see how a cancer experience I had, that led me to adopting the Genesis 1:29 diet for my recovery, has resulted in God’s health message being taken to the world by over 10,000 trained Health Ministers now located in every state in the U.S. and 54 foreign lands!”
Today, millions of people around the world have adopted The Hallelujah Diet, while tens of thousands have shared that they have recovered from over 170 different health challenges, including terminal cancers, by simply adopting God’s original Genesis 1:29 diet. May their numbers grow!
