Living Beyond 100 On The Hallelujah Diet
Mar 10th
For the past four Health Tips we have been featuring my “Health Heroes” – men who not only overcame serious physical problems, but went on to live until nearly the century mark on a 100% plant-based diet.
Today I want to introduce you to a fifth gentleman and his wife, very special people Rhonda and I had the privilege of knowing personally. In fact, we enjoyed a number of meals at their home and they enjoyed many meals at our original Hallelujah Acres Café and Restaurant in Rogersville, Tennessee.
Introducing Russ and Edie Dalson: Vegetarians for 82 and 76 Years (and counting)
Russ Dalson was born on April 26, 1902 and lived in wonderful health until he passed away in March 2004 only weeks from his 99th birthday. Edie was born on January 28, 1910 and celebrated her 101st birthday in January 2011. To this day she is active, well, and still following a 100% plant-based diet.
Russ was intrigued by a 100% plant-based diet when he met with Paul Bragg in Los Angeles California at age 22. This was before Paul Bragg became well-known for his worldwide lecture tours in which he promoted a healthy diet and lifestyle. (Read our recent recent story on Paul Bragg.)
But Russ’ biggest reason to become a vegetarian was his own experience with ill health at the age of 15, while earning his way through high school on a farm in Wisconsin. After getting his knees wet while picking strawberries in the mud, he developed a serious case of inflammatory rheumatism from his knees to his hips. He had to remain in bed for weeks.
A doctor told him the problem was eating “too much pork,” and sent him home with instructions to not do anything until the swelling went away. “As I lay on that cot I made a vow to myself that I was not going to be worn out by the time I was 70, but sadly at the time didn’t know anything about anything.”
Then, at the age of 19 it happened again while working in California; Russ developed inflammatory rheumatism in his right knee. He went to an orthopedic doctor who told him to not eat any meat for a month, and no pork for six months. At that point in his life he made the decision to never eat meat again, but he wondered what he could eat.
His first feelings about vegetarianism were “I thought I was going to die because I didn’t have anything I could eat.” But he learned fast. Even in the 1920s there were several vegetarian restaurants in Los Angeles, which served an all-raw menu including vegetables, fruits, fresh juices, soups, pies, and wafers baked in the sun.
On a 100% plant-based diet, Russ not only overcame his physical problems but went on to work for the Los Angeles Bed and Spring Co., where he did his grocery shopping at the Farmer’s Market, and would bring a box of raw produce to work every day, eating “whatever raw fruits and vegetables” he purchased at the Farmer’s Market.
While working at the Bed and Spring Co., Russ weighed 145 pounds. He was responsible for moving 10,000 pounds of angle iron 100 feet and then had to roll out 10,000 pounds of coil. It was a job that would wear a pair of horse hide gloves “right off your hands” every two weeks. “If I could be a vegetarian and do this kind of work, I could do anything,” he said.
After meeting Russ in 1927, Edie became a vegetarian (they celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary just before Russ’ passing in 2004). But even before meeting Russ, Edie didn’t eat much meat because her mother was a Seventh-day Adventist.
Russ and Edie moved to Tennessee in 1984 and settled in Eidson, Tennessee a suburb of Rogersville, Tennessee. In 1992 they began frequenting the brand new Hallelujah Acres Restaurant and Health Food Store. They were thrilled to find a restaurant where they could find food to fit their diet. They soon became good friends to Rhonda and this editor.
When we knew them, Russ and Edie ate as much raw food as possible and used their Champion Juicer to make everything from carrot juice to an all-fruit frozen banana/strawberry “ice cream.” Another factor in their longevity was that they never smoked cigarettes or drank alcohol. Their long lives allowed them to enjoy their four children, 16 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.
In addition to being vegans since their teen years, Russ and Edie felt that their complete trust and faith in God allowed them to live such a long and happy life. When this editor last saw Russ in 2004, Russ gave these words of advice: “You can eat all the raw food you want and the more raw food you eat, the better off you will be.”
On the day of Russ’ passing, he and Edie had been shopping at Walmart; he was in perfect health. However, as he and Edie were preparing lunch, somehow he fell in the kitchen, struck his head, and went to be with Jesus. Edie is still, at the age of 101, active, healthy and well, and still eats a 100% plant-based diet.
Rhonda and this editor are thankful for the years we had the privilege of knowing and having great fellowship with these precious people. They had a wonderful influence on our lives and were a source of great encouragement in our efforts to help others improve health on a 100% plant-based diet, patterned after God’s original diet for mankind in Genesis 1:29. AMEN
The Testimony of A “Century!”
Mar 3rd
For the past three Health Tips we have been featuring three of my “Health Heroes” — Jack LaLanne, Paul Bragg, and Dr. Norman Walker. These three men overcame serious physical problems [two as teenagers and one past the age of 50] with a 100% plant-based diet and lived on to nearly 100 years of age.
Today I want to share the testimony of someone else who overcame a life-threatening physical problem on a 100% plant based diet. He made the diet change at age 63 and then went on to regain his health and live until nearly the century mark. I first met this man in 1978 while lecturing at the Shangri-La Health Resort in Bonita Springs, Florida, when he attended one of my lectures.
Health Minister Beverly Shouldice, of Shallow Lake, Ontario, Canada, was born on January 31, 1915. He loved the Lord and he loved people, and went home to be with Jesus on November 18, 2006 – just two months shy of his 92nd birthday.
Bev [as he was affectionately called], adopted The Hallelujah Diet after being diagnosed with terminal melanoma cancer by Canadian doctors in 1978. Not willing to accept the doctor’s death sentence, he and his wife Dorothy [Dot] went looking for an alternative way to deal with his cancer that might offer some hope — because the doctors offered him none.
In their search they journeyed to the Shangri-La Health Resort in Bonita Springs, Florida where I was lecturing at the time. It was at the Shangri-La that the Shouldices learned the benefits of a 100% plant-based diet and the powerful healing potential contained in freshly extracted vegetable juices. They also learned how these juices could rebuild the body’s immune system so that the body could heal itself, even of terminal cancer.
Upon returning to Canada, both Bev and Dot adopted this 100% plant based diet this editor was teaching [before it was called “The Hallelujah Diet”]. It wasn’t long before Canadian doctors could no longer find any trace of Bev’s cancer.
Because of Bev’s almost miraculously recovery, he wanted fellow Canadians to learn the same biblical health information that had restored his health. So he set about establishing “Hallelujah Acres Canada.”
Bev and Dot converted their beautiful and spacious home in Shallow Lake into the first headquarters of Hallelujah Acres Canada. The first floor became the headquarters while Bev and Dot continued to live upstairs.
Bev was instrumental in sponsoring numerous Health Minister Trainings in Canada, and for many years this editor had the privilege of going to Canada to conduct these trainings.
While in Canada I lived in their home and they always treated me royally. Dot would have my BarleyMax waiting for me each morning and always made sure I had my vegetable juices and vegan meals. I have so many wonderful memories.
Bev was also an avid organic gardener and taught many people how to grow their own food in raised beds in addition to showing them how to change their diets in order to restore their health. Even in his advanced years, Bev always had time, if someone showed the slightest interest, to share The Hallelujah Diet and how to garden in raised beds.
Because of Bev & Dot’s burden and untiring efforts to help others restore their health, tens-of-thousands of Canadians have adopted The Hallelujah Diet and experienced its healing power. For his efforts, Bev was able to add nearly 30 healthy, active, and productive years to his life. Because of Bev and Dot’s desire to bring God’s Health Message to Canada, hundreds of Hallelujah Acres trained Health Ministers are now scattered across the Canadian provinces.
Today, Judy Fleming has built a solid structure on the foundation that Bev and Dot laid for Hallelujah Acres Canada where there is a Hallelujah Acres store, shipping center, and training center in Toronto, Canada.
Bev is survived by his dear wife Dot, who at the age of 92, is still going strong on The Hallelujah Diet, still active and living in her own apartment.
Bev of course is greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, but it is thrilling to know that because Bev refused to accept his doctor’s death sentence after a terminal cancer diagnosis, The Hallelujah Diet he introduced to Canadians so many years ago continues to bring health and healing to multitudes across that country.
I am proud to add Beverly Shouldice, the Founder of Hallelujah Acres Canada, to my list of “Health Heroes” – joining the ranks of Jack LaLanne, Paul Bragg, and Dr. Norman Walker, who we introduced to our readers in previous Health Tips. May their numbers grow!
A New Life at 90-Years-Young
Feb 24th
In last week’s Health Tip #692, I shared a number of birthday greetings I had received from across America and around the world. One of those greetings was from Health Ministers George and Peggy N. who live in Mesa, Arizona:
“Happy Birthday George! You look great on the cover of the recent ‘Hallelujah Acres Health News’. We showed your picture to our ‘Get Healthy/Stay Balanced’ students and asked the question – ‘Don’t you want this kind of energy, health and vitality as you approach your 8th decade?’ We certainly do! We sent a testimony of my mom who has been on The Hallelujah Diet for 15 years to you recently. She will celebrate her 90th birthday in March.”
Accompanying that birthday greeting was the testimony of that 89-year-old woman:
“My name is Marie H.; I was born in Aurora, Missouri on March 25, 1921. In June 1996, at the age of 75, I heard Rev. George Malkmus in Lodi, California give his testimony about overcoming cancer by simply changing his diet.
One thing George talked about was acid reflux. I had this condition and had chewed antacid tablets like candy for over 30 years. George said, ‘you can get over acid reflux in seven days by simply giving up animal products.’
Could his claim really be true and could I give up animal products for a whole week? So being from the ‘show me’ state, I said to myself, ‘show me!’ With the encouragement of my daughter, Peggy, I took George’s challenge.
On the sixth day of the seven-day challenge, I no longer had acid reflux. But not only did I give up meat for those seven days, but haven’t eaten any meat in nearly 15 years. And as a result, and by following The Hallelujah Diet, have been antacid free for 15 years.
My daughter, Peggy and her husband have been Hallelujah Acres Health Ministers for over 15 years and they showed me how to prepare healthy meals for my husband and me. I didn’t miss my old SAD diet, but my husband would grumble about missing his meat.
However, The Hallelujah Diet dramatically improved our health. My husband no longer needed his high blood pressure medicine and nor his pre-diabetic medication. He went to be with the Lord a few years ago, but I believe that his quality of life in his later days was lengthened by The Hallelujah Diet. We were married for 65 years.
I will be 90-years-young this month. Actually I tell people that ‘I will be 25 on the 90th day of March.’ I recently passed my driver’s license test with a 100% score. I still drive to church, grocery shopping, the mall, and eat out with friends. I also clean my own home and prepare my own meals.
A few years ago, Peggy and her husband took me to Hawaii. It was very exciting riding a parasail with my daughter, riding on the back of a Sea-Doo with my son-in-law, and putting my toes in the sand at the beach with my great grandchildren. Life is good!
Three of my grandchildren wrote the raw food recipe book: ‘How We All Went Raw.’ They call themselves the Top Raw Men; because they are in TOP physical condition because they are on the Hallelujah Diet and eat raw fruits and vegetables, seeds and nuts. My granddaughter calls herself the ‘Chic Flavor’ of the Top Raw Men.
I meet weekly for lunch at a local raw food restaurant run by Liz F., another Hallelujah Acres Health Minister in Sacramento, California. The other day a customer in the restaurant bought my grandchildren’s book and walked over to my table and asked me to autograph the book. I asked her what she would like me to write and she replied, ‘just sign it Top Raw Grandma,’ and I did.
When I go to my doctor for my annual checkup, the doctor invariably asks me to name all the medicines that I am taking. The doctor and medical staff are always amazed with my answer. ‘I feel healthy; have no pain, and TAKE NO MEDICATIONS.’
I give all the credit for my good health to Jesus for leading me to The Hallelujah Diet. Thank you George, Rhonda, Paul, and Ann Malkmus for teaching and living the Genesis 1:29 diet. Amen!”
EDITOR’S NOTE: Dr. Norman Walker was introduced to the raw plant-based diet 50s and went on to live within seven months of 100th his birthday. Above we read the testimony by Marie, who made the diet change to a 100% plant-based diet at age 75 and is still experiencing excellent health at age 90. These types of testimonies are not unusual for senior citizens who adopt The Hallelujah Diet. We have had testimonies of people in their 80s and 90s coming out of wheelchairs and even nursing homes after making the diet change. (Children with parents in nursing homes who put parents on BarleyMax and take them daily carrot and other raw freshly extracted vegetable juices often see almost miraculous improvement in their parents’ health!)
Birthday Wishes From Around The World
Feb 17th
Thank you so very much for all of the kind birthday greetings you sent this editor this past week on the occasion of my 77th birthday. Following are just a few of those greetings sent me from across America and around the world:
“Rev. Malkmus, on February 12th and all the days thereafter, may the Lord bless you and keep you, make His face to shine upon you and give you peace. Thank you for all you do to let others know that they don’t have to be sick.
Thank you, too, for training us in sharing the Health Message with others. We now have 12 who are already on The Hallelujah Diet or are taking steps to adopt it. Too God be the glory!”
Health Ministers Jorge & Jane D., Cochabamba, Bolivia, South America
“George, I congratulate you on reaching the age of 77 in great health, and for the passion with which you share what God has revealed to you. Through reading your book The Hallelujah Diet, I have been led to a number of similar books including The China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell. I have since gone on to take Dr. Campbell’s course successfully on ‘Plant-based Nutrition.’
Where I live, there are challenges to living The Hallelujah Diet, but I am trying hard. Thank you for all you do to help others.”
Reindorf P., Ghana, Africa
“Hi Brother George, birthday greetings from Canada! We hope you have a terrific Birthday!”
Health Ministers Rick & Bobbi-Jo M., plus Hallelujah Acres babies Alexander, Katie, and Hallelujah Baby #3 on the way, Canada
“Happy 77th birthday! What a praise to outlive both your parents and still feel strong with all the energy of your youth. Yes, enjoy your birthday and do take a honeymoon, too. We appreciate all the years of your dedication to helping the world be a better and healthier place for all of us. Congratulations and many, many more years of health and blessing from our Lord. Aloha!”
Health Ministers George & Ruth M., Hawaii
“Happy birthday Rev. Malkmus! My wife and I are Christians and have three boys. We are all semi-Hallelujah Diet followers at present but not fully committed as yet. However, after reading in your Health Tip today about how healthy you are as you celebrate your 77th birthday, I am very encouraged to go ‘whole hog’ or rather ‘whole carrot’ to be politically correct.”
Andrew S., Poland
“Happy birthday, George!
She will celebrate her 90th birthday in March!”
George & Peggy N., Mesa, Arizona
“Happy birthday! And I hope that you have many more years to spend with Rhonda. I love your family and the Hallelujah Diet. The diet has been such a blessing to me personally. Those many years when MS [multiple sclerosis] gripped my body and life, I could never have imagined living my life as normal as I am living it today. I give all of the credit to you and The Hallelujah Diet. Thanks and once again, ‘Happy Birthday.’”
Jane H., Shelby, North Carolina
“Happy birthday, Rev. Malkmus. Thank you for being such an inspiration to so many of us as we age! Knowing we have heaven to look forward to is the most important, but to know that we can have a vibrant, healthy, and sickness free life until we graduate to heaven is the next best thing this side of heaven. May God bless you with many more years.”
Zina
“Dear Brother Malkmus, I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish you an early ‘Happy Birthday.’ My husband and I have started The Hallelujah Diet and are looking forward to seeing wonderful results. May God continue to bless you and Rhonda and keep your ministry going to the millions around the world. Blessings!”
Carmen R., RN
“Happy birthday, Rev. Malkmus. Hope you have a wonderful birthday and many more. I have been on The Hallelujah Diet since January 2000 and a Health Minister since July 2000. I am now 75 years old, enjoying excellent health with no health issues, and take no medications.
I was a practicing registered nurse until three years ago when I retired at age 72. Now I stay busy doing volunteer work, still taking care of sick people and spreading the Hallelujah message, ‘You Don’t Have To Be Sick.’”
Health Minister Norma M., RN
“Hi Brother George, Just a few lines to wish you a very blessed day on your 77th birthday. Hope it is the best one you have ever had. So glad to hear that you are finally going to take some time off for just you and Mrs. Rhonda. It is way past due and well deserved. You have given so much to others for so long. May God continue to pour out His blessing on you and the Hallelujah Acres Ministry.”
Health Minister Rev. Gene G., New Bern, North Carolina
I’ll Never Go Back To My Old Ways – Barbara
Feb 3rd
I wish you could sit where I sit and read what I read each day as letters come in by e-mail and postal mail from around the world telling of the incredible improvements people have experienced in their health after applying The Hallelujah Diet to their lives. Following are a few of those letters:
“Rev. Malkmus, I attended your ‘God’s Way to Ultimate Health’ seminar this past Saturday at the Altamonte Springs/Orlando Hilton and want to thank you for all your knowledge and effort promoting the plant-based diet. You are tireless and very convincing that this is the only way to live.
I am not new to The Hallelujah Diet as I have done the 60-Day Challenges and received your Health News magazine and Health Tips for a long, long time. I also have most of Rhonda’s recipe books. I have now been a vegan for about 20 years and just wanted to let you know that I appreciate all of your hard work.
It is refreshing to know that you are not in it for the money, but are genuinely interested in helping people learn how to live long while enjoying a healthy life.”
Claris W., Florida
“Hi Dr. Malkmus, I want to thank you for all the good information in your books, magazine and Health Tips. I have learned a lot and have changed a lot. My health is so much better now because of you. May God bless you with a long life and happiness! You and Rhonda are people with a heart for God’s people. You are changing the world.”
Eloiza H.
“Dear Rev. Malkmus, Thank you for your ministry! I praise God for using you and giving you the wisdom and knowledge to help multitudes. I sent my testimony in after doing the 60-Day Challenge.
Before adopting The Hallelujah Diet, I never expected the fun and joy I would experience preparing healthy meals as I now do. I will never go back to my old ways of living and eating! Now folks are always complimenting me about my health and can’t believe I am as old as I am.
It was kind of funny that when I was experiencing all those physical problems that have disappeared since adopting The Hallelujah Diet, my doctor told me raw foods were bad for me. How wrong he was and by the way, I have not gone back to him since making the diet change because I no longer get sick.
Before the diet change another doctor had me eating so much protein that I was just getting sicker and sicker. I was so very depressed and frustrated and losing so much weight which I didn’t want to lose. I was at my wits end and was searching for answers when my friend told me about The Hallelujah Diet. I thought I can at least try the 60-Day Challenge and within just a few days after accepting the challenge and adopting The Hallelujah Diet the results were unbelievable. I now have so much energy! But one of the best things I have experienced is that I now have one or two bowel movements a day. Before the diet change I was lucky to have one a week.
I plan on a visit to Hallelujah Acres soon to attend one of your seminars and then attend Paul and Ann’s “Where Do I Go from Here” classes. People laugh at me because of the way I now eat, but that’s ok, because I am now well and many of those who laugh at me are sick. You and Rhonda have been a tremendous blessing to me and it’s all because of your desire to serve the Lord. May the Lord continue to bless you above and beyond! I love you and your family.”
Barbara C.
“Hello Mr. Malkmus, I have been on your mailing list for several years and appreciate so much you sharing God’s plan for a healthy life. I became a vegetarian thanks to reading your book ‘Why Christians Get Sick’ many years ago.
I have four children and as a result of bearing children or maybe a combination bearing them and of lifting them, I have developed a hernia just above my belly button. I have read that if you have a hernia you should get it fixed by surgery. Can this hernia be healed by diet?”
Andrea H.
EDITOR RESPONDS – Unfortunately, a hernia is something that most likely will require surgery to repair. This is a structural issue upon which diet has little impact.

No matter the source (testimonies shared at my seminars, email, or snail mail) it is the testimonies that have been shared through the years that have had the greatest effect upon those looking for relief from their physical problems.
